Internet-Enabled POS Technology
Over one billion people access the World Wide Web each month. During the same period, over five billion people pay at the point of sale where increasingly they use a POS payment terminal. This vast reach of the point of sale represents an excellent opportunity for the payment industry. Via a terminal screen, this industry offers the means to extend Internet content to a very large market, most of it made up of merchants not yet on the net. Internet-enabled POS payment terminals could represent a huge asset to their owners.

Internet-Enabled POS creates New Business Opportunity
Through the Internet, POS payment terminals can evolve into multi-function information and commerce devices. These terminals, which occupy a central and visible place on the retail counter, were restricted to a narrow set of functions in the past. They were primarily used just for credit, debit, check and EBT (electronic benefits transfer) transaction authorisation and capture. Today these terminals can do more, and in the process, bring new services, new revenues and new opportunities to merchants, processors, banks and ISOs. Furthermore, equipping the terminal with a browser and connecting it via the Internet to servers lets us escape the limitations of embedded software, its related memory issues and the tedious downloading of software. In this browser/server environment, new applications can be added quickly to all terminals almost instantaneously, without regard to terminal memory limitations.

ICE and i2POS: Gateway to Business in the 21st Century
The i2POS framework and ICE POS terminals link the merchant and business owner to the most powerful network in the world - the Internet. i2POS brings the Internet to merchants in a form that adapts to how they already do business: using card-based electronic commerce POS equipment. With i2POS, the terminal is transformed into a multi-application interactive platform that uses the power and scale of the Internet. With the ICE terminals and i2POS framework, NeraTelecommunciations brings a new gateway to business in the 21st century.

Bringing the internet to the Retail Countertop
The point-of-sale (POS) terminal has been Internet-enabled by Hypercom’s technology framework for access to Internet-based information and applications. The framework is called i2POS, acronym for internet-to-POS. i2POS brings a range of valuable new functions, capabilities and information to the retail counter. These features support benefits that increase retailer revenue streams for processors, banks and independent sales organisations (ISOs).

With i2POS, the conventional POS transaction terminal is being transformed into an Internet information-delivery platform, e-commerce access point and narrowcasting consumer-advertising platform. i2POS delivers Internet-enabled applications at the point of sale through ICE (Interactive Consumer Environment) terminals. They facilitate interactive payment, promotional transactions and information delivery through a consumer operated touch-screen. i2POS and ICE terminals extend the reach of Internet-based advertising and content to a vast consumer retail market at the point of sale that may not be exposed to the Internet today. The i2POS technology is also the first comprehensive framework in the industry for Internet-based retail counter commerce. ICE terminals are used as the merchant access point for e-commerce, eliminating the need for costly, complex and difficult-to-support PCs. i2POS is a quick and effective way for the majority of merchants to start selling through the Internet. With i2POS, it has created the means for every merchant to become an e-business company, with minimium investment and risk.

I2POS Infocommerce
Internet-based information and commerce delivered at the point of sale is made possible through i2POS. i2POS represents a comprehensive framework that consists of browser-equipped touch-screen terminals that connect to the Internet through a set of Web-enabled servers. These servers support a broad range of screen and application gateway functions for translation, routing and security.

A New Generation of Terminals
The touch-screen ICE terminals incorporate capabilities consistent with the ongoing trend toward customer-activated transactions. This trend enables consumers to retain their cards, a practice that will be more in demand to combat skimming fraud. Customer-activated terminals will become mandatory when multi-function smart cards with stored-value applications appear. ICE terminals support the range of standard payment functions supported by traditional terminals: debit, credit, checks and EBT.

The ICE terminals also include a secure PIN pad, and their touch-screen is a signature capture pad that supports electronic receipt capture. Traditional embedded software on the ICE terminal supports financial transactions. Terminal software is certified and thus is a trusted entity. The ICE terminals support the new Internet-related functions via a browser, which supports new applications through the i2POS gateway and the Internet. ICE terminals are equipped with a fast-training 9600 bps (bits per second) modem called FastPOS™ that makes the Internet functions practical over dial-up. Ethernet, which allows connectivity through cable and ADSL modems, is also available.

ICE Teminals: Secure Internet Appliances
Two important factors will ensure the continuing use of payment terminals at the point of sale, even when faced with the growing integration of a PC-based system into retail operations. One factor is the need for a cardholder interface device. This device is used for PIN entry, signature capture and other cardholder-activated functions. Secure and certified hardware and software combinations must support these functions. The other factor ensuing the continuing use of POS payment terminals is that many small to medium-sized merchants will not put a PC on the counter. A Web appliance1, in many cases, will eliminate the need for a PC since it can support all the Internet-related functions that a PC performs. These functions include e-mail, ordering supplies, e-commerce, and Internet banking, indeed anything supported on the Web. The appliance will offer these capabilities at a lower cost, with reliability and minimum user training. The ICE terminals combine a secure embedded-software-based payment terminal with a low-cost Web appliance in a single unit. Since they have a ready market for their payment functions, they may be the first practical Web appliances to achieve significant market penetration.
